Sal Levantin, private eye. Half black but passes for Italian so he can get hotel rooms. Found as a baby on the riverbank, in the arms of his dead mother, clutching a bracelet of Olmec blue jade. Grew up in the Seventh Street Protestant Orphan Asylum. Bears an odd resemblance to the Cannon brothers, heirs to an old plantation family and co-owners of a slaughterhouse empire. Plays the trombone in his spare time.

Manon LaChance, card sharp. Travels on the Mississippi riverboats, cheating at poker for a living. Faked death to escape her husband, a Chicago Outfit underboss. Can’t resist shiny things. Left a trail of broken hearts and picked pockets through every town south of Peoria. Gold-plated derringer strapped to her thigh. Plans to buy herself a Caribbean island when she gets a stake together.

Vic Jerusalem, boxer. Son of a Visayan cowpoke. Went twelve rounds in Manila with the featherweight champion of the United States Pacific Fleet, at age fourteen. Brought to Jersey City by the hotel manager and fight promoter “Texas” Fletch, where his career was derailed by an infected tooth that almost killed him. Elves have told him in a dream that he’ll die if he enters the ring again. Fletch wants him to do it anyway.

Fatima Perez, conjure woman. Makes her living as a spirit healer to rich ladies. Sells gris-gris medicine bags, channels the ghosts of husbands and dead kids. Lebanese-Mexican - claims to worship the goddess Tanit, keeps a turquoise hamsa on a string around her neck. Can regurgitate ectoplasm on command, using cheesecloth. Trying to maintain her belief that none of it is real.

Specialties - occult history, the idle rich.
Eli Scott, missionary and doctor. Born into the Church of the True Advent in Dickson, Tennessee. Spent a decade travelling through Latin America, setting broken legs and saving souls. Entered the jungle in search of a lost temple of the Aztec filth god Tlazōlteōtl. Found by chicleros three months later, naked and amnesiac. Suffers from recurring bouts of fever, hallucinations and a left eye full of parasitic worms.

Specialties - medicine, religion.
Diego Chaparro, revolutionary. Former member of the Liberation Army of the South. Kept fighting for land reform and socialism, with a few comrades, after the rest of the movement laid down their arms. Ambushed by the law during a bank robbery in Veracruz - shot three cops and escaped by the skin of his teeth to America. Now lying low. Pretty sure he knows the name of the guy who betrayed him.
